How To Survive A Heart Attack

This is useful information. It might come in handy some day, although for your sake and mine, I sincerely hope that we won’t have to use it on ourselves!

How to survive a heart a heart attack when alone?

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing conscious.

What to do?

Answer: Do not panic, but start coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough - the cough must be deep and prolonged as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every 2 seconds without let-up. Until help arrives or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to hospital.

Trivia

Here’s a little Trivia for you. However, I can't guarantee the accuracy of all the points. :-)

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king in history:
Spades - King David
Hearts - Charlemagne
Clubs - Alexander, the Great
Diamonds - Julius Caesar

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase......... "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which
we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

(On the temperature of water in wells) The reason why the water in wells becomes colder in summer is that the earth is then rarefied by the heat, and releases into the air all the heat-particles it happens to have. So, the more the earth is drained of heat, the colder becomes the moisture that is concealed in the ground. On the other hand, when all the earth condenses and contracts and congeals with the cold, then, of course, as it contracts, it squeezes out into the wells whatever heat it holds. – Lucretius

Mobile Phone Explosion

Report from Chinese daily Shin Min News :-

A Chinese man was killed at the Guangzhou computer shop where he worked when the mobile phone in his pocket exploded, severing a major artery.

According to local Chinese daily Shin Min Daily News, the rare accident happened on Friday (30 January) when the mobile phone which the victim put in his chest pocket exploded.

The man who is in his twenties, is an employee at the computer store and was carrying out his duties when the accident happened.

An employee working at the same store told the Chinese media that the incident happened at about 7.30pm. The employee, who was not named in the report, said that she heard a loud sound and saw her colleague lying on the floor of the shop in a pool of blood.

Shin Min reported that the employee also told the Chinese media that the victim had recently changed the batteries in his mobile phone.

It was believed that the victim had just finished charging his mobile phone and put the device into his pocket when the phone exploded.

Chinese authorities have yet to determine the make and model of the phone and its battery.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Chinese daily consulted experts on how consumers can prevent themselves from falling victim to a similar situation:

1. Always use original batteries, be sure that batteries by the manufacturer are meant for your mobile phone model

2. Never modify your phone

3. Always use original battery chargers

4. Do not expose your mobile phone to high temperatures and avoid exposing it to direct sunlight

5. Avoid long phone conversations

Chinese New Year Gathering

Chinese New Year Gathering at Freddy’s House - 27th of January 2009

I have been tasked with writing a report on the gathering at Freddy’s place. Lucky me. Those who were at the gathering that night, please feel free to add anything that I might have missed out. Here goes:

Location – Seventeen, XYZ Gardens. ( I use XYZ instead of the actual name in case Freddy is not comfortable having his address made known in public).

You will note it is ‘Seventeen’ and not ‘17’. This will give you an idea that the residence is different from others. The word 'posh' don’t even do justice to the place. I don’t even know what they call this type of houses. And it is not just one house, but two houses with the dividing wall knocked down to join as one. It is an absolutely fabulous dwelling.

Anyway, I arrived at about half past six to find Mr. Chow, Bala, Kim Chuan and Kian Seng already there – the early birds. Of course, New Year greetings and wishes were exchanged, and I settled down to hear what they were gossiping.

Since the gathering was for 6 pm onwards, people trickled in at their own time – some alone, some in twos, and threes. By half past seven, almost all who said they will be going had turned up. By then, the buffet was ready and it was time to eat.

Instead of exchanging oranges, as was the custom, Freddy decided that he will give each of us a MP3 player. Cunning fellow! Now we all know why he is so well-to-do. He kept all the wealth we wished him and never give us any!

We were also given a copy of the book – ‘My Mother’, written in Mandarin by Freddy’s sister. Since she happened to be around, some of us asked her to autograph her book, and it turned out to be quite a book signing session.

After dinner, Freddy, who is very much into running – he likes to punish himself thus – started recruiting joggers to join him in his forth coming Sundown Marathon run. He had taken upon himself to ‘recruit’ at least one person from the group. He wasn’t very successful to begin with. All the uncles and aunties have all sorts of ailment, as you can well imagine. However, luck was on his side that night, and he found a ‘volunteer’ in Kian Seng. We were all significantly relieved, as otherwise, I don’t think Freddy would have allowed us to leave. Thank you, Kian Seng, for volunteering!

As the evening wore on, everyone was visibly more relaxed, chatting, interacting, catching up, and of course, gossiping. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a pleasant evening. The weather was nice too – it was not too humid and there was a nice breeze every now and then.

All too soon, it was time to leave. Time really passes when you are having fun. However, Freddy remembered just in time that we were suppose to ‘lo hei’. He had almost forgotten about it. So, the ingredients were produced and we all ‘lo hei’.

For those who do not understand the term, I will try to explain what it is, as best as I can. Those who know better can correct me if I am wrong. ‘Lo hei’ means to – loosely translated – ‘toss up’. In this case, to toss up any wishes that we may have, so that they will come true in the new year. It is a dish of sliced raw fish, Julian of carrots and cucumbers, mixed with a sauce and sprinkled with condiments. It is believed that the higher you toss the dish, the better luck and wealth you will have. I think, traditionally, people 'lo hei' on the 7th day of the Lunar New Year, but these days, most people do it any time between the first and fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year. There are some who 'lo hei' when they have their reunion dinner.

I hope I am right and clear on the term ‘lo hei’.

Anyway, to continue with my report … As it was a working day on the morrow, we didn’t stay long after the ‘lo hei’. And it was with regret that we parted company for the evening. All in all, a very pleasant evening was had by all, I am sure.

I see that Freddy has posted the group photo. You will observe that there are four new faces in the picture. A big and warm welcome to Bessie (Chai Yin), Irene (Mui Hua), Polly (Choon Lin) and Shirley (Sum Moi). Very glad that you were able to join us, and we hope to see you again at our next gathering.

And on behalf of all who attended the gathering at Freddy’s place, a big 'Thank You!', Freddy, for having us!

Cheers!

Vincent

Endeavour - 1953

Dear friends

Mr Kanda has searched through his treasured possession to help us unfold some mysterious past of our school. He found some old magazines dated as far back as 1953 - 1957 and has very kindly made copies of those publications for us. I have read through them and was enthralled by what the school and students were involved in during those days. Other than missing out on computer technologies, those students were not worse off in view of the enrichment programs they enjoyed and their high command of English as reflected in their essay and poem writings.

They had fun fairs in those days to raise funds for scholarships and to buy a projector for the school so that they could screen films for the children as follow-ups on their lessons. They even formed an Animal Lovers' League to rescue stray animals in the vicinity.

In view of the interesting history, I thought it would be a good idea to share some excerpts of them with you on the blog. Below are from the 1953's publication. However if you do wish to read the complete hard copies, feel free to get them from me.

Mr Kanda, your contribution is deeply appreciated. Thank you !

Regards
Ai Lay
